PRESS RELEASE

Taunton Top Choice for Cornish Pasty Company- Proper Cornish chooses town for first pasty shop -
Taunton has beaten off stiff competition from around the UK to be chosen as the top spot for a brand new Cornish eating experience. Proper Cornish Food Company, one of Cornwall’s most established and respected handmade pasty experts, is opening its first ever Cornish bakery café in the heart of the town. The unique outlet, which promises to be a little corner of Cornwall in Somerset, opens on Saturday 11th July on North Street, from 8am to 5.30pm.
Jane Flowerdew, Marketing Director at Proper Cornish Food Company, said: “Our first ever pasty shop is a brand new venture for us and a brand new experience for the people of Taunton. We’ve been making traditional handmade pasties for decades and have always dreamt of opening our first bakery café. We felt that Taunton, with its lively community and strong interest in good food and drink, was the perfect place to realise our dream. We certainly aren’t about to be another non-descript high street bakery chain, we want our first shop to offer locals the chance to savour the authentic flavour of Cornwall on their doorstep.”
Along with 12 delicious handmade pasty flavours - all packed with real Cornish ingredients - the new, inviting Proper Cornish bakery café is also set to tempt customers with an array of tasty treats with a Cornish connection. Baguettes sourced from a local artisan baker, will be filled with Cornish ham and Cornish free range eggs, while Cornish cream teas will be served using Boddingtons jam and Trewithen Farm clotted cream. Seasonal fruit served with yoghurt or clotted cream will also be available.
Jane Flowerdew adds: “Provenance is one of our core values and we will be sourcing our quality ingredients from trusted suppliers in Cornwall, as well as from local partners around Taunton. We’ve even put pictures of our farmers on the shop walls so that customers can see the people who’ve grown the fantastic food that they’re eating.”
With seating for 40 people, pasty passionistas can choose whether to enjoy lunch in the bright and airy bakery café, or opt for the convenience of delicious food on the go. The soft leather sofas and walnut wood furniture also make it the perfect place for a coffee and a handmade cake or cookie. Customers relaxing in the café’s contemporary, down to earth environment, enjoying wholesome Cornish fare while leafing though Cornish magazines, will almost feel as if they have stepped into sunny Cornwall for a couple of hours!
Jane Flowerdew said: “We want our new shop to stand out from the crowd with its warm, community feel, top notch customer service and real Cornish food. We are a family business - we started out with our traditional steak pasty which is based on an old family recipe handed down through several generations - and we want our honest, straight forward approach to be reflected in our shop. We never compromise on quality; we know the farmers that supply everything from our potatoes and swedes to our Cornish clotted cream. These days there is so much more focus on real food and where it comes from, and we’re hoping that locals will be keen to taste an authentic Cornish pasty from their not so distant neighbours.
“Opening our first pasty shop is a dream come true for us and we’re looking forward to extending a warm Cornish welcome to the people of Taunton.”
