School Pasty Competition

25 June 2007

Rebecca Thomas from Cape Cornwall School was today announced winner of a competition to create a new nutritious pasty flavour aimed at teenagers.  Rebecca's winning lentil and sausage pasty beat off competition from across the region, as she scooped the prestigious winner's title, an i-Pod Nano and £500 for her school's food technology department - courtesy of Proper Cornish Food Company.

The competition to design a new pasty flavour formed part of a 12 lesson educational resource created by Proper Cornish Food Company and designed to teach GCSE students in Cornwall about the process of New Product Development.  Rebecca impressed judges with her original recipe and thorough market research into taste trends, nutritional requirements, competitor products and the demand for high quality local produce.

Briony Bates at Cape Cornwall School, commented: "The resource has been fantastic for the pupils. Not only did they enjoy completing the project, they learnt the importance of using and eating nutritious, fresh and local ingredients. The 12 lesson plan, fitted perfectly with the National Curriculum Syllabus and the competition really sparked the students' imaginations.  I am sure we will continue to use the resource for years to come".

Phil Ugalde, Managing Director at Proper Cornish Food Company said: "We wanted to raise awareness amongst students about where food comes from and how it is produced, as well as the fundamental elements involved in developing a desirable and successful product. We are committed to driving interest in the food and drink sector and this resource has enabled us to communicate with younger generations about the great career opportunities available."

Rebecca Thomas from Cape Cornwall School commented: "I really enjoyed participating in the project.  I learned so much, not only about food itself, but also the importance of researching your product and market before going into production. I am absolutely delighted to have won".
